England vs the USA

Lucy Bronze grabbed the headlines after England’s victory over Norway, after her stunning strike put the finishing touch on a captivating team performance. The Lionesses were among the favourites to lift the World Cup before the first ball was kicked, and their progression through the competition hasn’t done anything to dampen that optimism.

At the start of the tournament, the odds on England lifting the trophy were 6/1, and heading into their semi-final against the USA, those odds have shortened to 4/1. The USA’s game against France was a rare one in which they looked fallible, and if England can perform anywhere near the level they have so far, those odds could end up being generous.

The USA, though, have shown why they’re the favourites to win this year’s tournament, most notably in their 13-0 demolition of Thailand in the group stages. Their quarter-final victory over France might not have been as comprehensive, but it set another record in being the team’s 10th straight World Cup win. England might be fancied to win the trophy by fans back at home, but the USA understandably head into their semi-final as the favourites, with odds on them standing at around Evens.

Top Scorers

This semi-final could have a huge impact on who emerges as the winner of the tournament’s Golden Boot, and on the betting odds. England’s Ellen White has been on scintillating form, scoring five goals through four matches to occupy the joint position as the current top goalscorer.

Team USA’s Alex Morgan is right alongside her on five goals, although all of those came in the team’s win over Thailand. It was up to Megan Rapinoe to step up and find the net in the game against France, and she scored two to take her goal tally in this year’s tournament to three.

The eventual top scorer may well depend on which team makes it through this semi-final, for the other names at the top of the goal-scoring table have already exited the tournament. Australia’s Sam Kerr put in some incredible performances to score five before they were knocked out by Norway in the round of 16, and the same goes for Brazil’s Cristiane, who scored four before her team’s defeat to France.

Top Betting Tip for England vs USA

With the tournament’s two leading scorers on the field, it’s safe to expect that there will be goals when England and the USA meet on Tuesday. Alex Morgan has been inconsistent so far, so the mantle of favourite falls on Ellen White, who has scored in four out of five of England’s games so far. Back White to score and England to win the match for a decent return.
