WRC Rally Finland 2017 Betting Tips

The ninth round of the 2017 World Rally Championship sees the very best drivers in the sport descend on Finland as each and every competitor aims to conquer the unforgiving gravel stages that weave their way through the forests of Jyvaskyla. Despite a third place finish in Poland, Sebastien Ogier remains 11 points clear at the top of the Drivers’ Championship table, however, Thierry Neuville will be confident of closing the gap, especially after picking up his third win of the year in round eight. Can the Belgian narrow the gap even further or will Ogier take a huge step towards glory?

Sebastien Ogier is just five races from securing the 2017 Drivers’ Championship title, however, the Frenchman has failed to deliver a first-placed finish since round six in Portugal. In that time, the 33-year-old has seen his lead cut to just 11 points as the race for the ultimate crown in world rallying dramatically heats up. In his last outing in Finland, a mistimed turn meant that Ogier failed to make an impression on the race, a disappointing result considering he won the title in 2013 and went so close in 2014 and 2015.

Thierry Neuville has been on fine form of late, finishing third in Italy before powering to victory in Poland later in the month. The charismatic 29-year-old may have started the season poorly, but podium finishes in his last six races, including three wins, have the Hyundai driver on course to catch leader and rival Ogier.

Jari-Matti Latvala will be confident of securing a third victory in four years as he takes to the stages in what is his homeland event. The Finn endured a disappointing race in Poland as he finished in 20th position, a whole 28:01 seconds behind eventual winner Thierry Neuville. However, not one to be deterred by one poor result, the 32-year-old is certainly capable of making a statement on gravel and could justify his position as one of the favourites to take the title come close of play on Sunday.

Sports.net’s View

Sebastien Ogier may be ahead in the current standings, but a crash that ruined the suspension in the M-Sport test car has severely hampered the Frenchman’s preparations for this race. This hasn’t affected teammate Ott Tanak’s chances, but M-Sport's focus on their potential title winner could leave the Estonian somewhat in the dark. Ogier is 5/1 to top the podium, while Tanak looks a little more tempting at 9/4.

With the ghosts of last season threatening to haunt Ogier, this race looks as if it could provide title rival Thierry Neuville with an ideal opportunity to sneak up on the Drivers’ Championship leader. The Belgian is currently evens to steal the premium prize, a fair price considering the gap at the top of the table has been narrowed with just five races to go. However, Neuville hasn’t enjoyed much success in Finland over the last few years and could be forced to settle for a second or third-placed finish this time out.

The eyes of Scandinavian rally fans will be firmly fixed on local lad Jari-Matti Latvala. The experienced Finn, who is yet to win a Drivers’ Championship outright, has dominated this event in the past and will be eager to add to his win in Sweden earlier in the season. Latvala will also be helped by the fact that last year’s winner, Kris Meeke, is not performing to his own high standards this year, ultimately leading to Citroen effectively writing off their season. With the Ulsterman unlikely to threaten, the path looks clear for another Latvala romp.
